Participants of Sankara Eye Hospital at the eye screening camp (1)Bangalore, July 19, 2017: Sankara Eye Hospital and Rotary Club -District Avoidable Blindness Committee, R. I. District 3190, India organized a free one day eye camp for the underprivileged school children in Tumkur which witnessed participation from more than eleven schools in Sri Siddaganga Mutt, Tumkur.

Eye care technicians from Sankara Eye Hospital screened more than 10,000 students during the camp to check for any eye problems and issues. Around 1,060 children were identified with eye defects and have been advised corrective measures and further consultation at the hospital. This will be addressed in the second phase of the program which involves a secondary screening of those identified with vision issues during the preliminary check. Spectacles will be provided to correct refractive errors, medication will be prescribed as required and patients requiring intervention will be directed to the hospital during the secondary screening.

“We are extremely overwhelmed by the responses received from the schools and institutions. Early screening is the best way to prevent blindness. Eliminating avoidable blindness is our vision.  We look forward to continuing such screening activities as an integral part of our ongoing commitment to Community Eye Care”, said, Mr. Vikram Chaudhuri, Unit Head, Sankara Eye Hospital, Bangalore.

“‘It was a great experience! Rotary clubs who supported this camp are eager to take it forward. Even Joint director (Ophthalmology), Directorate of Health & Family Welfare also confirmed that support in terms of spectacles – free of cost can be provided to those children with refraction problems and subsidy for surgeries can be provided to empaneled eye hospitals under National Blindness Control Program”, said Rtn.
