May 13, Mumbai – Mumbai-based premier carpet brand Cocoon Fine Rugs is all set to start a ‘Sustainable Sundays’ series for the month of May. The sessions for the same will be held on two Sundays of the month, i.e., May 21 and 28, on an invite-only basis at the company’s store in Worli. This passion project by the founders, Ayush and Smriti Choudhary, aims to make children aware of the environment and what they can do to save it and the planet.

Through this event, children will participate in activities where they’ll learn about sustainability and the environment in a fun and engaging manner. One of the activities will involve making artwork out of waste yarn that’s left out after the process of rug weaving. This will then be followed by a candle holder-making activity, which will then be followed by a group activity of creating an ocean-themed installation that will stand 10 feet tall. This installation will be used for the purpose of spreading awareness about our oceans.

In order to create a buzz around Sustainable Sundays, the brand has created ‘The Cocoon Man,’ aka the brand mascot. He will be in charge of delivering the invites to leading mom bloggers and HNIs across Mumbai. With Sustainable Sundays, Cocoon Fine Rugs wishes to spread awareness about sustainability and why it is important to make the best of the resources that we have at present.

“The reason I conceptualized the Sustainable Sundays series is that when we hand-weave our carpets, we collect a lot of waste during the year. In addition to being an advocate of sustainable living, I felt that what we consider waste can be transformed into something useful and beautiful if we make an effort to think out of the box and act on our ideas. So I chose to collaborate with Hemali Jain, founder of Helm, who curates events, and with artist Rashi Aggarwal, who will conceptualize the activities for children. I figured, Why not have our children come and see how we can create something beautiful out of the waste from our rugs and carpets? We invite all moms in to experience the same and have their children be a part of this creative process,” said Smriti Choudhary, owner, of Cocoon Fine Rugs.

Cocoon Fine Rugs is an award-winning retail brand known for its unique twist on traditional Persian rugs. Each rug stands out in its own right, with sophisticated, modern designs doing all the talking. What makes these rugs so special is the fact that each one is hand-made with love and is made using the finest quality natural materials, such as silk and wool. With five stores across the country, the brand not only aims to provide a great design but also feels the need to be as sustainable as possible in its operations.

Founded in 2009 by Ayush Choudhary, the brand is a product of his connection with carpets. This happened as a result of his extensive travels to Rajasthan and Gujrat, where he met carpet weavers who were doing their best to preserve the age-old art form.

The brand’s dedicated and loyal community of skilled weavers and craftsmen has devoted over 40 years to bringing their art to life. In some cases, three generations of a family have been associated with the company. This shows how Cocoon Fine Rugs treasures its artisans and runs a number of initiatives to support them and their families. The art of weaving runs in these families, and the brand does its best to keep this art form alive by conducting several communication and awareness initiatives in the design community.

When it comes to the approach of ‘practice what you preach,’ Cocoon Fine Rugs makes sure to live up to it. With sustainability at its core, the brand has a number of practices in place to ensure that they stick to it. Each rug is handmade and is meant to last a lifetime. This not only helps in decreasing the overall consumption and carbon footprint but also in valuing the time and efforts of the artisan who made the rug. Besides that, the brand makes the effort to package its rugs in a bag made of organic cotton, which can be reused several times.

So, come over and ‘edutain’ your children and yourself with the Sustainable Sunday series only at Cocoon Fine Rugs, and let’s go the extra mile for our environment.
