The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across the metropolis, urging authorities and residents to remain vigilant.
This is the second consecutive day of intense rainfall, especially in the suburbs, where waterlogging and traffic snarls have disrupted daily life. Despite the severity of the showers, civic officials have clarified that there is no immediate cause for panic, and comparisons to the catastrophic 26 July 2005 deluge—which brought the city to a standstill—are currently unwarranted.
Police Urge Caution
In a public advisory, the Mumbai Police have requested citizens to stay indoors unless necessary. “We urge all residents to avoid stepping out unless essential. Commuters should check for weather and traffic updates before traveling,” said a spokesperson.
Emergency services have been placed on standby, and police patrols have been intensified in flood-prone areas to assist with evacuation if needed.
Municipal and State Agencies on High Alert
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), along with state disaster management units, has deployed additional staff to monitor the city’s drainage systems, clear clogged inlets, and respond swiftly to localized flooding.
“All relevant agencies are on high alert. Control rooms are operating 24/7, and pumping stations are running at full capacity,” said a senior BMC official. Local train services — Mumbai’s lifeline — are running with delays in certain sections, and officials are continuously monitoring track conditions.
Rainfall Forecast
According to the IMD, the city and its suburbs are expected to receive 100-150 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, with isolated areas potentially receiving more. The orange alert, the second-highest in IMD’s warning system, suggests that residents should “be prepared” for potential disruptions and keep emergency contacts and essentials ready.
The heavy rain is being driven by a strong monsoon current over the Konkan coast. Meteorologists note that while such rainfall is typical for July, climate variability and urban development have made the city more vulnerable to even average monsoon bursts.
