15th June, 2020, Mumbai, Beej, an eco-conscious accessories and lifestyle brand, based in Mumbai uses plant-based leather alternatives to create timeless and mindful products.

This Father’s Day, Beej introduces its Maru range of wallets and card holders that are made from Desserto derived from nopal cactus also known as prickly pear cactus. Beej is the first brand to bring this new leather alternative to India.

Desserto was created by Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez in Mexico with the purpose of finding an environmentally conscious alternative to animal leather. Since the past year, Desserto has been sweeping awards across the globe. Last month they won the Monte Carlo Fashion Week 2020 Award for sustainability as well as the Green Product Award 2020 in Germany.

Commenting on the launch, Ms. Arundhati Kumar, Founder, Beej, says, “We are absolutely delighted to be the first brand to bring Desserto to India. I have been following their journey for a while now and it’s thrilling to see them sweep sustainability awards across the globe. Beej is amongst the first few brands globally to start designing with Desserto. As a material, it perfectly complements our search for a sustainable and vegan material with low environmental impact. We are launching a limited collection now, and are working on a full range that we hope to launch very soon.”

About Beej: Beej is a premier Indian eco-conscious accessories and lifestyle studio based in Mumbai. It was launched in January of 2020 by Arundhati Kumar, who envisioned a future where sustainability and style could coexist. At the heart of the brand rests the promise of empowering people and the planet by crafting products from sustainable and plant-based materials that are ethically and responsibly sourced.

The values of the brand are rooted in its commitment to nature and its responsibility to the people. Beej chooses to work with raw materials that are kind and mindful of the environment. Organic, biodegradable, vegan, handwoven, recycled and up-cycled are just some of the elements of sustainability that these materials contain. The brand works with two other major raw materials besides Desserto,Piñatex which is derived from pineapple leaf fibre, and cork which is harvested ethically from the bark of the cork oak trees. For trims and accents, it uses up-cycled leather collected from REACH compliant factories as well as recycled fabric for lining and recycled nylon zippers. Through nuanced craftsmanship, a trend agnostic design and a made-on-order approach the brand aims to keep sustainability at its core.

Beej is a zero waste brand and every element in their products is sustainable down to their packaging which is completely repurposable.
