“Donate Organs, Transform Lives”

Navi Mumbai: Organ donation is an immensely noble act that has the power to save and transform lives. By willingly donating one’s organs, individuals demonstrate their selflessness and compassion toward those in need. The decision to donate organs not only gives hope to patients waiting for a transplant but also brings solace to their families who are desperately seeking a miracle. To commemorate National Organ Donation Day, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai organized interesting activities like fashion shows and live music bands. The chief guests of honour were the Kidney and Liver organ donors who had given a “Gift of Life “ to their loved ones.

As per data released by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) for the year 2022, Telangana has stood at the number one position in terms of the number of deceased organ donors as well as in the number of deceased organ transplants. The number of deceased organ donors in Telangana in 2022 was 194, which is the highest in the country; this was followed by Tamil Nadu – 156, Karnataka – 151, Gujarat – 148, and Maharashtra – 105. In terms of deceased donor transplants in 2022, Telangana tops the chart with 655 transplants followed by Tamil Nadu – 553, Karnataka – 435, Gujarat – 399, and Maharashtra – 305.  Organ donation is life-altering and gaining pace across the country.

The act of organ donation is a testament to the inherent goodness present within humanity. It exemplifies our ability as human beings to rise above our own needs and extend a helping hand to others. When we choose organ donation, we are choosing life over death, offering another chance at happiness and well-being for someone who might otherwise see no hope for the future. Through organ transplantation, individuals can regain their health and live fulfilling lives once again. Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai celebrated National Organ Donation Day to foster understanding, compassion, and knowledge about the life-transforming gift that is organ donation.

Dr Amit Langote, Head of Nephrology and Kidney transplant, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai said, “Organ donation is the need of the hour as thousands of lives hang in the balance, desperately waiting for a second chance at life. The demand for organ transplants far outweighs the supply, leaving many patients with no hope or a significantly reduced quality of life. With advancements in medical technology and surgical techniques, the success rates of organ transplant surgeries have significantly improved over the years. However, this progress is limited by the shortage of organs available for transplantation. Currently, there is an alarming gap between those awaiting organs and those willing to donate them. This gap can only be bridged if more people understand and appreciate the importance of organ donation. One organ donor can save up to 8 lives. By donating their organs after death or even while alive through living donations such as kidney or liver transplants, individuals can potentially save multiple lives. The event aimed to encourage everyone to come forward and donate organs.”

Dr Vikram Raut, Head of Liver Transplant, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai said, “To reduce the demand for organ transplantation by promoting healthy lifestyles and wellness, spread awareness about brain stem death, deceased organ donation and control of illegal practices related to organ transplantation and to bust myths and misconceptions related to organ donation and transplantation, we came up with a day-long event wherein around 30 doctors, hospital staffs, patients and their family members participated in fun activities such as fashion show,  live band and other fun activities. Many talented recipients and donors showcased their skills of singing or dancing and shared their life-changing experience of transplant. This was followed by a certificate and trophy distribution to the organ donors. “LIFE AFTER TRANSPLANT” a book based on organ donation was introduced.  This book explains the Do’s and Don’ts after organ transplant. Everyone present at the event pledged to donate organs and transform lives.”
