Experts discuss the need for a holistic natural approach to beauty

Mumbai, 12th May 2022: Almond Board of California today hosted a panel discussion on the “Need for a Holistic Natural Approach to Beauty” featuring renowned Bollywood actress and celebrity Soha Ali Khan, Skin Expert and Cosmetologist Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta along with Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head, Dietetics at Max Healthcare – Delhi. The panel was moderated by RJ Smita of Radio Mirchi.

Keeping skin and beauty concerns in mind, the panelists spoke about the need to adopt a more holistic approach to naturally take care of their skin from within. The discussion largely centered around the importance of good nutrition and lifestyle for better skin health as well as different elements that can ensure healthy skin and beauty. After all, good skin health and beauty is a byproduct of a healthy diet coupled with exercise, and quality sleep. It does not solely depend upon topical application of products.

Commenting on the importance of wellness and beauty, renowned Bollywood actress and celebrity, Soha Ali Khan said, “Working in an industry which requires you to look perfect in front of a camera almost all the time, it is very important for me to look after my health and wellness. I believe that natural beauty is a reflection of one’s inner health and no amount of makeup can replace that. To ensure my skin looks healthy, I am mindful of my lifestyle and the kind of food I eat. I always make sure to exercise regularly and don’t give in to eating junk food frequently. My diet usually includes a lot of fruits, vegetables, lean meat and almonds. For my skin health, I prefer to consume a handful of almonds daily as they are known to be a rich source of Vitamin E and other antioxidants that are beneficial for skin health. Almonds are also a source of good unsaturated fat that can nourish your skin from within.”

Cosmetologist and Skin Expert, Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta added, “As I always say to my clients, medical skin treatments are not the only solution to skin problems. In fact, skin health is determined by a combination of factors such as your health, diet, physical activity etc. and to truly ensure healthy glowing skin, one must maintain a good lifestyle and diet. A diet comprising of essential nutrients, vitamins and healthy fats is crucial for good skin. Consuming almonds can be beneficial for the skin. Almonds contain healthy fats and vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) that may benefit skin health. And that’s not all. A recent study showed that wrinkle severity and skin tone improved in postmenopausal women who ate almonds daily. [1]. Avoiding prolonged sun exposure, wearing protective clothing and using topical sunscreen are key strategies to protect one’s skin against photodamage. Research suggests that diet may also play a supporting role. A promising study[2] published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology indicates that consuming almonds may help support the skin’s resistance to UVB light.”

Commenting on the direct relationship between good nutrition and skin health, Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head, Dietetics at Max Healthcare – Delhi mentioned, “Although a balanced diet is best for your overall health, each body part has specific requirements, including your skin. To maintain healthy skin, you need a wide variety of nutrients, including healthy carbohydrates, proteins, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. Also, one should make sure to drink sufficient water. Eating more balanced foods as a generalized approach can benefit your health generally and your skin specifically. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits and unsaturated fats and low in dairy and sugar may lead to healthier skin. The vitamins, minerals and antioxidants present in foods like fruit, vegetables and almonds are consistently associated with fewer wrinkles and less age-related dryness[3]. Nuts like almonds are a good source of Vitamin E, healthy fats that can nourish your skin from within.”

By making positive lifestyle changes like making fitness a part of one’s daily routine and choosing a handful of almonds each day in place of less-healthful snacks, women across India can support their skin from within.
