MAharashtra Government Reschedules Eid-e-Milad Holiday After MLA Aslam Shaikh’s Appeal
Mumbai, September 2, 2025 –
The Maharashtra state government has declared a public holiday on Eid-e-Miladunnabi on 8th September 2025, following the intervention of MLA Aslam Shaikh, who had formally appealed to Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis through an official letter. His efforts have been widely welcomed, bringing immense joy to the Muslim community ahead of the festival.
Originally, Eid-e-Milad was scheduled to be observed on Friday, 5th September 2025, a day that coincides closely with Ganesh Visarjan on Saturday, 6th September 2025. Concerned about the overlap of both major events, Shaikh requested that the holiday be shifted to Monday, 8th September 2025 in order to avoid logistical challenges, traffic congestion, and security issues, while also promoting religious harmony.
Community leaders, including Maulanas, Imams, Qaris, Hafizs, and Muftis, extended their support by agreeing to conduct Eid processions on 8th September. This voluntary decision reflects the spirit of cooperation between Hindu and Muslim communities, ensuring a peaceful and smooth conduct of both festivals.
Eid-e-Miladunnabi, also known as Mawlid al-Nabi, marks the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. This year, it is expected to be observed on September 5. Muslims across the world commemorate the day with prayers, processions, charitable acts, and by decorating mosques and homes with lights and banners, spreading the Prophet’s message of peace, compassion, and unity.
By taking the initiative to request an official holiday, MLA Aslam Shaikh ensured that families in Maharashtra would have the opportunity to celebrate with greater devotion and enthusiasm. His intervention is being seen not only as a gesture of community leadership but also as a step towards strengthening religious inclusivity and social harmony in the state.
The government’s decision, influenced by Shaikh’s proactive role, has been lauded by community leaders as a move that reinforces Maharashtra’s commitment to cultural diversity and respect for all faiths. They believe this step will allow Muslims to celebrate the festival in its true spirit—together with family, friends, and the wider community.
