Chennai, September 28, 2017: With the growing demand for complex eye surgeries and accessibility to their patients, Aravind Eye Hospital, opened its first super speciality eye care centre in Chennai, today at Poonamallee High Road.
The hospital is spread over 500,000 sq.ft and includes all the sub-specialities in ophthalmology. The objective is to provide high quality ophthalmic care at affordable cost. The centre has 250 remunerating beds and a separate section exclusively for the underprivileged with 500 beds either as free services or at steeply subsidised rates.
India is the second most populous country in the world and has tremendous unmet need for ophthalmic care. Factors expected to fuel India’s ophthalmic market growth include an upsurge in dietary change-related eye diseases, growing incidence of myopia, a growing middle class, and improved access to care. In terms of treatments for diseases or disorders, the largest markets are for cataract surgery, retinal drugs, and glaucoma medications, according to Market Scope.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Aravind, Chief Medical Officer, Aravind Eye Hospital said, “Aravind Eye Hospital dedicates its 12th hospital to the service of the community. We have been receiving patients for complex surgical procedures. The new hospital helps in our vision of responding to the increasing challenges of eye care in the country. The state-of-the-art infrastructure, compassionate and affordable care are the key tenets of Aravind Eye hospital.”
There is an increase in number of patients visiting the hospital year-on-year; at Madurai and other locations for speciality eye surgeries which are complex and to avail quality eye treatment at subsidised cost. The physical environment and infrastructure developed at Aravind-Chennai, is a reflection of the values for which the organisation stand for – transparency, integrity, and compassionate care. The facility will serve as a centre of excellence by treating patients, training eye care professionals spreading the latest and best practices in eye care.
