Mumbai/Thane 1st Aug 2022: India’s alarming rate of eye disease is because of the lack of a sufficient subset of screening programs. Abnormal eye concerns like cataracts, glaucoma, refractive errors, and macular degenerative ailments could cause total blindness. By screening for eye health problems, doctors can detect potential diseases and diagnose them at an earlier stage.

Dr.Rakesh Shah, Ophthalmologist at Swaraashi Netralya, Thane, introduced two state-of-the-art ophthalmic devices: the “3nethra neo HD FA” and the “Mirante SLO/OCT. Both devices help detect all ophthalmic medical conditions in children and adults in areas where medical help is the farthest away. The devices enable high-resolution imaging. It is also lightweight, compact, and can be operated by minimally trained technicians.

3nethra neo HD FA device is a first of its kind in Maharashtra, this is a compact portable, and easy-to-use mydriatic ultra-wide field digital imaging system with Fluorescein Angiography (FA) for diagnosis and photo documentation of ocular diseases in new-born and children particularly for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), retinoblastoma and other diseases.

The Mirante SLO/OCT is a scanning laser ophthalmoscope used to capture high-quality color images, fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (ICG), fundus autofluorescence (FAF), unique retro mode images, OCT scan, and OCT Angiography. A new device called Mirante has been launched in Thane/Mumbai that helps screen for diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and other retinal disorders. It is a valuable tool for helping to prevent blindness and other vision problems in adults.

In order to screen and diagnose the most potentially harmful illnesses of sight more quickly at an affordable cost, Dr.Rakesh Shah, Ophthalmologist at Swaraashi Netralaya said “ Forus neo can easily be set up in private clinics, hospitals, mobile screening camps, and community settings. Common eye ailments in children can be diagnosed using the latest technology. Eye surgeons are able to diagnose issues with a patient’s retina, cornea, and other parts of the eye. This technology allows for more accurate diagnoses and treatments for patients.”

Discussing the root causes and prevalence of childhood blindness in India, Dr.Rakesh Shah said “we do run a number of eye screenings program in school, but there are no follow-ups done, and affected children are not referred further to an eye specialist and therefore no interventions are done. Swaraashi Netralaya is committed to providing quality eye care to all, regardless of economic status. With the introduction of 3nethra neo HD, we are making it possible for more children to have access to quality eye care. I urge the government to encourage mandatory eye screening for children born premature and weighing less than 2 kg.
