Ovarian cancer is often called a “silent killer” because its early symptoms are subtle and easily mistaken for common issues like bloating, indigestion, or fatigue. This is why the majority of cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, making awareness absolutely critical.
Every woman should know the warning signs: persistent bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, and frequent urination. If these symptoms last more than two weeks and are new or unusual for you, it’s important to consult a gynecologist or oncologist promptly.
Certain factors increase risk, including a family history of ovarian or breast cancer, BRCA1/BRCA2 gene mutations, age (most cases occur after menopause), and conditions like endometriosis. Women with a strong family history may benefit from genetic counseling and testing.
Early detection significantly improves survival rates, yet there is no reliable screening test for ovarian cancer like there is for cervical or breast cancer. This makes symptom awareness and regular gynecological check-ups even more vital.
This awareness month, let’s encourage the women in our lives to listen to their bodies, seek medical advice without delay, and never ignore persistent symptoms. Knowledge and early action truly save lives.
Stay informed. Stay proactive. Prioritize your health.
