Mumbai, September 9, 2026: Renowned diabetes specialist and researcher Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre & Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, Chennai was conferred the prestigious Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Leadership Award in Healthcare and Medicine by the Florida International University (FIU), Miami, USA on September 8, 2026 in recognition of his distinguished contributions to diabetes research, healthcare and the advancement of precision approaches to diabetes therapy.

The recognition acknowledges Dr. Mohan’s decades-long contributions to diabetes research, clinical care and public health, as well as his leadership in advancing the understanding and management of diabetes.

A key focus of Dr. Mohan’s lecture was the relevance of precision diabetes to Asian Indian and South Asian populations. He highlighted the distinctive characteristics of diabetes in Indians and South Asians, including the development of diabetes at younger ages and at lower levels of obesity compared with several other populations.

Dr. Mohan also highlighted the significant contributions of Indian diabetes research to the global understanding of the disease. His extensive research in India spanning diabetes epidemiology, genetics, metabolic phenotyping and diabetes complications has helped shed light on the distinctive characteristics of diabetes in Asian Indians, as well as the differences observed across individuals and population subgroups.

The conferment of the Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Leadership Award in Healthcare and Medicine by FIU is yet another recognition of Dr. Mohan’s outstanding contributions to diabetes research, healthcare and the advancement of precision approaches to diabetes. He has previously been honoured with awards from Emory University, Atlanta; the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; Stanford University, California; and Harvard University, Boston.
