Navi Mumbai: The burden of stroke is increasing in India. The stroke is now the fourth leading cause of death and the fifth leading cause of disability. On the occasion of World Stroke Day, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai introduced a Comprehensive Stroke Centre while emphasizing the significance of getting treatment in the golden hour.

Medicover Hospital has established a comprehensive Stroke Center where patients can get efficient care to avoid major brain damage. It has 24*7 imaging services, and experienced doctors who can diagnose and provide treatment for stroke on time. The logo of the Stroke Centre was unveiled on Friday at the hospital. Stroke team includes Neuro Physician, Emergency Head, NeuroSurgeon, Physician, Radiologist, Intensivist, Physiotherapist, Interventional Neurologist and Nurse trained in stroke protocol and management were present at this event.

A stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery that delivers blood to the brain or a vessel ruptures and bleeds. When the brain does not receive this oxygen-rich blood, its cells start damaging. The longer it goes without blood, the more damage occurs.
Speaking on the occasion,* Dr. Jayendra Yadav, Consultant Neurologist, Medicover Hospitals* said, “Time is of the essence as the sooner the patient reaches the hospital and gets the treatment in Golden Hour, the better the chances of preventing major brain damage. The most important advantage of having a Comprehensive Stroke centre is that it reduces the time delay, and complications and improves outcomes.

Early recognition of stroke symptoms and recognizing the importance of calling ambulance on time improves the timeliness of appropriate emergency care, resulting in improved health outcomes. Rehabilitation helps stroke survivors become more independent and improves their quality of life. While rehabilitation is not able to reverse the brain damage caused by the stroke, proper rehabilitation can significantly assist people in achieving the best long-term outcome possible.

“When a stroke happens, every minute counts. The faster you are diagnosed and treated for a stroke, the better the chances of recovery, which is why access to a comprehensive Stroke Centre is critical, where state-of-the-art facilities and highly skilled specialists are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. “, says Dr. Abhijit Sawant, Head and Consultant Accident and Emergency Department, Medicover Hospitals.
