Smt Draupadi Murmu is being elected as the first tribal woman of the nation, the new President of India

July 21, 2022, New Delhi:  Draupadi Murmu, a tribal woman is the country’s highest Constitutional chair. Around 4,800 members of India’s parliament and legislative assembly cast their votes this week to elect the 15th president. Today Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Draupadi Murmu has been elected as the new President of India over opposition nominee Yashwant Sinha, with a high number of votes cast in her favour. Murmu is also receiving the support of other regional parties in state assemblies. she has the support of Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Janata Dal (Secular), Shiromani Akali Dal, both the factions of Shiv Sena and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

Many hope her tenure will help India’s marginalized Indigenous population. Her life-long efforts towards the upliftment of the marginalised sections and vision for an inclusive society are an inspiration and a benchmark for every Indian. Murmu belongs to the forest-dependent Santhal tribe of Odisha. The tribe is spread over four states and is India’s largest scheduled tribe after the Bhils and Gonds.

Murmu started out as a teacher before entering state politics. she was elected as the MLA from Odisha’s Rairangpur assembly constituency in 2000 and 2004 on a BJP ticket. She has been a legislator twice, on a BJP ticket, in 2000 and 2009. In 2015, Murmu was appointed as the first female governor of the eastern state of Jharkhand, holding the position until July 2021. and held the post for over six years.

As the First Citizen of India, Droupadi Murmu will be allowed a slew of privileges including free housing and medical care for life, a custom-built Mercedes Benz with a state-of-the-art security system to travel in and a pension of Rs 2.5 lakh per month
